While homemade nail polish can be made in a rainbow of colors, it’s highly advisable to add a top/matte coat. It’s very helpful in terms of protecting the nail as well as the colored layers of paint. Like the other layers of polish, you can make clear polish at home. This eliminates the need to spend expensive nail polish bought in stores. It will also allow you to use ingredients that are less toxic for your health and nails, but which is another plus.
You’ll first need to round up these ingredients:
- Nail polish
- Cornstarch (other options are cosmetic pigment powder, matte eyeshadow mica).
- Sifter (tightly-woven)
- 2×2 inch piece of paper
- Nail polish
- 3 ball bearings
- Cup/dish (small)
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Select a nail polish/powder:
It’s important to choose a bottle that isn’t full to prevent powders from causing the bottle to over-flow. I you’re making a matte topcoat, make sure to use clear nail polish as well as cornstarch. You can put it over any manicure to form a matte. However, to make a custom color, you should use clear polish. You should also add matte eyeshadow, mica powder, or pigment powder (cosmetic). Cornstarch will aid in making the finish more matte.
2. Get your powder ready:
It’s important that the powder you choose is very fine, so any lumps must be removed. Scrape out eyeshadow first then use the end of a pencil/brush to break it up. Meanwhile, pigment powders and mica powders are usually already fine, so there are no clumps. Just a couple pinches cornstarch/cornflour are needed.
3. Form a funnel
You can do that by using a 2-inch x 2-inch piece of paper. Roll it up so it forms a cone. The pointy end must have an opening so the powder can go through. Then open the bottle of nail polish and put the funnel in it. The pointy end shouldn’t contact the polish.
4. Add the powder
Use a teaspoon or small scoop to add the powder. It’s better not to use your fingers if the powder sticks to your skin. If you’re using mica powder, eyeshadow, or (cosmetic) pigment powder, add a little cornstarch/cornflour. That will make the polish more matte if the powder is shiny.
5. Add ball bearings
This is an option, however it is a good idea to consider. It will make it easier to mix the polish, especially if you start with a polish base that’s clear. If you use a solid color you probably won’t need the ball bearings since they’re already contained in them. Make sure that the mixing balls’ diameter is about 1/8 inches. The best material to use is stainless steel.
6. Shake up the bottle
Cloe the bottle cap tightly then shake it for a couple minutes. Stop shaking after the color has become uniform and even. Stop shaking the bottle if you can’t hear the ball bearing s moving anymore.
7. Test the polish
It’s important to test the polish to see if you need to make any changes. After it’s mixed, open up the bottle and then use a brush to put some on your nail. Let the polish dry so you can see what it really looks like. If it’s too thick you can use 1-2 drops thinner for nail polish. If it’s not sufficiently matte, add some more cornflour/cornstarch. Meanwhile, if you use clear polish and it’s too clear, add some more pigment powder, eyeshadow, or mica powder.
If you’re looking for a homemade matte nail polish, the above-mentioned one is one of the best ones to make. It can provide an effective and affordable polish to make your nails as beautiful as possible. That’s definitely a plus over expensive polishes that can do more harm than good.
