Using essential oils as a part of one’s routine is a fun and easy way to obtain therapeutic benefits. You should be able to enjoy the benefits of the use of essential oils within a short period of time. If you are interested in using the essential oils and include it in your lifestyle, then you have to follow the right guidelines for it. You also have some safety precautions that you have to take to avoid the risk that highly concentrated essential oils have. Also, do take note that these essential oils are highly flammable.
Undoubtedly, the essential oils are important. Using them can bring lots of positive benefits. Here are some of the common uses of essential oils that you should try out:
1. For Inhalation
You can use the essential oil for easy inhalation. For this, you just have to get a tissue and then put three to four drops on it. You can then place the tissue near the nose. Start inhaling. When you are trying the essential oil for the first time ever, then use only a single drop. That way, you can check whether or not you are sensitive to the oil or if you will form an allergic reaction.
2. For Steam Inhalation
If using the essential oil for steam inhalation, start by boiling at least two cups of water. Once boiled, transfer the water to a bowl. You can then add three to seven drops of water in it. There are essential oils that can cause irritation to the mucous membranes so be sure to use fewer drops for them. Examples of such essential oils include eucalyptus, pine, cajuput, thyme, rosemary, and cinnamon.
Once ready, you can start the steam inhalation process. You can just start inhaling the water-essential oil mixture at about a 12-inch distance. Never inhale the steam from the bowl constantly. If you observe any discomfort or irritation, then immediately stop the steam inhalation process.
Generally, the steam inhalation process helps with influenza and colds. Just make sure that you use relaxing or energizing oils then. This method, when done right, can be extremely beneficial any time of the day or night.
3. Insect Repellent
Among the list of essential oils that can act as natural repellents against insects, the citronella, peppermint, and lavender are the most popular ones. You just have to add a few drops of these essential oils onto a cotton ball or tissue. You can then place these cotton ball or tissue near the doorways or the windows. It should effectively repel the insects. Take note of the safety precautions you have to take for these essential oils then, especially if you have children or pets around that may get their hands on the tissues or cotton balls.
4. Room Freshening
With the steam inhalation method, it should be easy to use the water-essential oil mixture to freshen the room. You can use about as much as ten drops of oil. You better use fewer drops in the case when you have an essential oil that causes sensitization. The use of lamp scent ring or aromatherapy diffuser is another method of using the essential oil to freshen the room.
5. General Home Freshening
Your laundry wash, vacuum bag filter, drain, and trash can are the ones that usually smell in the home. To avoid them smelly putrid, you can add a few drops of essential oil to them. You can also add a tissue with a few drops of essential oil into your closet or drawers to freshen it up.
It is okay to use the essential oils during baths. You can add the essential oils to running bath water. After mixing well, you can now soak in the tub.
7. Aromatherapy Massage
Using carrier oils added with several drops of essential oil, it is possible to do an aromatherapy massage. Just massage the blend to the body. Do remember to avoid applying the essential oil to the eyes and genital areas. Also, never apply the said substance onto the skin if it is not well-diluted.
